A Worthy News Model?
April 30, 2007

KatemosstopshopmodelHold the front page! Kate Moss is unveiling some clothes she designed at Topshop in London today.

Apparently the capital is bracing for a rush when the fashion range makes its debut.

Hi, I'm Josh, a sub-editor at Sky News Online, and I'm afraid I've got quite a few doubts about Sky covering this 'story'.

During our morning editorial meeting I couldn't bite my tongue and had to ask the question - why is it considered news?!

Isn't it just an advertisement or promotion for Topshop and Kate Moss? Where is the news angle in a model launching a new fashion range?

Our news editors suggested there was news value in Kate's successful comeback from past controversy. They told me the story illustrates the increasingly prominent role of fashion and celebrity in our culture.

Please! As far as I can see, she's a good looking woman trying to flog some clothes.

Maybe if a dozen women trip over their handbags in the rush at Topshop and end up causing a stampede I'll change my mind but until then I simply can't see how this qualifies as news.

Any thoughts?

As a mother myself i find it more more difficult to keep my patience with this so called celebrity!s. Drugs ,drink and smoking. Kate Moss and her boyfriend are a disgrace,

Kate Moss is one of the most enchanting fashion icons this country has ever had the good fortune to produce.
She has an effortless grace about her, yet she is always unassuming and natural.
She has the fortitude to conquer adversity.
It is just churlish to try to detract from her richly deserved success.

This was a clear case of non news and it was 'media' driven; I choose not to detail all who were culpable in this nonsense, I only choose to say that a certain public broadcaster seemed to be running regular adverts for this promotion.

The stupidity of customers and media was exposed by the fact that these were Top Shop clothes with Kate Moss labels attached; proof if proof be needed of the existence within our midst of an obsessed label owning section of the public.

Non news like models selling clothes seems to be part of an ever thickening smoke screen that covers the real news. Anyone rember the genocide in dafur?

even the bbc had the Kate Moss unveiling on its 10 o'clock news. the amount of people that actually turned up at top shop means that it is a newsworthy event unfortunately. will we ever get away from celebrity culture....i doubt it.

I know news is all about matters interesting and fascinating, but please tell "Whitney Houston-I have Nothing".

I am disgusted that she is still a top model and making headlines. Her "lifestyle" as we, the public see it, is abhorent, and she should not idolised, she is not a good example of a mother and hanging out with her boyfriend does her no favours.

If it's not news, how come so many people have bothered to click the link and leave a comment!
Expect cat fights, hair pulling and scratching at Topshop tonight... I predict a riot! And when the pictures are in the press tomorrow, then we can all deem it newsworthy or not.

How is it that a druggie who is launching her own clothing label for skeletons gets news coverage and yet a plane that had its engine on fire and had to make an emergency landing is nowhere to be seen on the Sky news website?!!

Hi Josh, I agree with 100%, hopefully (and soon) you get to be full editor (whatever the correct title is) and dump rubbish like this, I'd probably even perfer empty space then these types of articles!!

Take a look at Sky's Showbiz page, an absolutely vapid tabloid tacked onto an otherwise respectable news site. It's funny, because on TV, Sky News looks quite respectable, and then you go online and there's gossip drones Neil Sean and Ann Montini drooling and leering all over Brit's pert new bottom, Posh's boobs, Kate's new bikini bod. At least BBC news maintains a consistent set of standards.

It's not news. Articles like that, present in reputable, acclaimed newspapers and news websites, just put into question what they define as news. If people want to read about such things there are other publications that are entirely designed for this purpose - celebrity gossip magazines, fashion magazines, etc. Surely there is enough going on all over the globe without having to sink to Kate Moss' "successful comeback from controversy" for something to write about or for something to call "news".

Of course it's not news. Even if it was an example of Kate's come back it's not news. No one gives a monkey's uncle about Kate Moss. They really don't. When I see articles about her and other famous people like Boy George and the like I just assume there is X amount of news space and no good news to fill it with. What has Kate Moss done ever? She's a model and that's it. I did more interesting things than she did last week the only difference is no one has heard of me. If I was famous, me going to B&Q to buy some nails yesterday would have been in the news.
The media is half living in the real world and half living in the imaginary world it tries to create.
It's about selling news space in whatever format. The idea being that the more varied the rubbish reported, the wider the audience. Point is, no one cares full stop.
While were on the subject, what's the point in super models? We all know their names because they are on the news but how many of us have ever been to a fashion show or bought the clothes they model? Virtually none of us I'll bet. If Kate Moss died tomorrow who'd care apart from her family and friends and the media for about 1 day? No one that's who.

Well done Josh for highlighting something I have been thinking for ages. This is not news, it is total dross and doesn't warrant any coverage whatsoever. I do not understand this public obsession with celebrities et al.There are far more important issues to report than this crass mediocrity.

There were 100+ people murdered in Iraq over the weekend.....and this is news?

Call me a synic but by just raising the issue of whether this is or not a news worthy story has given that little more publicity to someone who makes a great deal of money from our interest in her life, good or bad. Probably best just to ignore it.

It never ceases to amaze me that Kate Moss is considered newsworthy at all under any circumstances. Seriously, she has not contributed anything worthwhile to society and she is one of the worst role models ever! I am so sick of Kate Moss and I will never again buy anything endorsed by her. Not to mention, the clothes she has "inspired" for Top Shop are really pretty dull. If you're going to make a big deal about fashion designers and new fasions, why not select someone who actually deserves the credit and "designs" clothes; how about some of the upcoming young designers in this city who have new and interesting ideas to offer and could really use the exposure rather than the overrated Kate Moss.

isn't it about time we started taking note of things that really do count - Kate Moss and her "insipring" a new range of clothes is not one of them!! She should be doing time for her drug use as should be that smelly git of a boyfriend of hers. Now that would be news - and setting an example!!

To be perfectly honest I couldn't care less whether Kate Moss bought out a new range of clothes or not, and that goes for any other celebrity.

This is definitely not front page news and should be kept to the celebrity gossip pages, which for some papers seems to take up all the whole newspaper!

As well as being a drug addict she's gone pretty ugly. I think the media is hanging out waiting for her next fall from grace. Can't see her clothes doing very well either.
Eventually she will be totally UN-Newsworthy.

This isn't news, it's just free advertising.

It demeans the word 'news'. A Coke sniffing model puts her name to cheapo copies of the outfits she's worn over the last 2 years, and it becomes worthy of news programmes?

If Jade Goody launches a new perfume we'll never hear of Darfur again.

Kate Moss a role model ? WHAT. She is going out with a junkie recetly seen with open sores all over his face and pitted fingernails. He looks like he stinks. She is often seen is similar states to him and she is a role model for our youth. Come on. I don't care if she has launched a clothing range or being launched into space the latter being my preference. Who is looking after her child ? when does she see her child ? does she allow smack head Pete near her child ?. Get her out of the news and focus on true role models the ones who make the difference in the world , the nurses, doctors, carers and many more. Instead of this "thing".

Not news, looks a lot like media being manipulated by PR company.

Dull and pointless story. Mind you, lots of them about. Hope you continue to put pressure on editorial to challenge some of them however.

Is it really such earth shattering news I can think of many more important deserving issues, than Kate Moss' clothing collection.

Is there any news that is news in the news today? Real stories are passed by, yet so called celebrities get all the free publicity they require, and it is called NEWS.
