Sky News In Second Life -It's Launched!!!!
May 27, 2007

By Simon Bucks, Associate Editor

Well, we launched Sky News Island today, with a live simulcast from the Hay festival.

700 people tried to get in but I am afraid we had to restrict numbers to far fewer than that. It wasn't invitation only, as someone suggested.  But there's only enough bandwidth for a certain number of people to get onto any island at one time.

But check out the newsroom and the Hay studio now.

Go to http://www.secondlife.com/ - register and download the software (takes only a minute or two) and then search for Sky News ( at Sky News 171, 92, 21.

There's a lot to see and do there. In the next few days we are going to put in the video of Adam Boulton's launch programme, so if you missed it live you'll be able to catch up.

There's also a video report about it here.

Let us know what you think, and if you have any suggestions for things we can add to the island. We got a lot of positive reaction from people who visited today, with some interesting ideas we are going to explore.

To those who question why we are doing this:  Sky News have always been at the forefront of innovation and we think that Second Life is a great way of allowing people to become familiar with what we do and how we do it.

As http://www.sky.com/news takes us into http://www.secondlife.com and by further virtue of the facts contained within yesterday’s blog, the launch no doubt has proven to be a huge success.
Alas, “There It Is”. Yet as I entered the “Shalimar” Island of Sky in this most virtual of environments, I somehow got stuck in a pool of water and now appear to be flying in the air near a castle.
Thank you for the great tips, but you see, my bandwidth didn’t let me get anywhere the opportunity to be rejected at the gateway, let alone by the Sky Island!
Still, happy days ahead as I look into does Khalid Work for Sky? (Why Not? Fantastic!) Oh Happy days, Oh Happy Days!

I was at the event, it was wicked! Thank you SKY NEWS for creating such a great island in Second Life. I cannot wait to see what you do next, if its anything like this I will be a regular visitor. The TV I took away is great, you can watch three channels - weather, entertainment and the news.

great stuff - keep it up!

This is the virtual world of our future i beleive and especially for people that have times with nothing to do it is fascinating and very addictive.

Second Life is brilliant, since your first article about 5 months ago i joined that night and have been in this world every day since, thanks.
